Gum recession occurs when gum tissue pulls back from the teeth, exposing the tooth root. An exposed tooth root can cause severe tooth sensitivity, particularly when it is exposed to hot or cold temperatures. Gum recession usually happens slowly, so many people do not realize it is happening until they begin to feel discomfort.
When left untreated, gum recession can eventually lead to tooth loss because the exposed root is more susceptible to decay. In some cases, people choose to have a gum graft for cosmetic reasons, to reduce the perceived length of the teeth.
